Random Facts

A pair of characters in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time look like the Mario Bros!

The fat guy on the left that resembles Mario is named Talon, and the taller Luigi-ish man is called Ingo. Talon is the owner of Lon Lon Ranch, a cattle ranch in the game’s native land of Hyrule. Ingo, on the other hand, is one of his ranch hands. Obvious comparisons can be made between the plumbers’ and ranchers’ body types, facial hair, and even clothing! The fact that these minor characters were modeled after Mario and Luigi should come as no surprise, seeing that Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto created both the Mario and Zelda games. The similarities go beyond just visual distinctions though – just as Mario typically steals the spotlight from his younger brother, Talon is known for taking credit for all of Ingo’s hard work on the ranch. Another conspicious connection is that Talon and his daughter Malon both wear a necklace with a charm that looks exactly like Bowser!

The “unlucky” number 13 appears several times on the American one-dollar bill.

Say what you will about luck, but the number 13 is significant in U.S. history because of the 13 original American colonies that declared their independence from Great Britain in 1776. If you are superstitious, however, this might freak you out a bit:

  • 13 steps on the pyramid of the Great Seal
  • 13 letters in “Annuit Coeptis”
  • 13 stripes in the shield on the eagle
  • 13 stars above the eagle
  • 13 letters in “E Pluribus Unum”
  • 13 arrows in the eagle’s left talon
  • 13 leaves, and likewise, 13 fruits on the olive branch in its right talon

Lord Voldemort was 71 years old when he died!

We are able to calculate his birth year first of all because we know that the Dark wizard formerly known as Tom Riddle opened the Chamber of Secrets 50 years before Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which takes place in 1992. Because Riddle was in his fifth year when he opened the Chamber in 1942, he would have been 15 years old upon doing so. Fifteen years prior to 1942 is 1927, but as we know he was born on New Year’s Eve, his birthday would have to have been on December 31st of the previous year, 1926. Therefore since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows begins in the summer of 1997, Voldemort would have been 70 years old at the time! His death takes place at the end of that 7th book on May 2nd, 1998, meaning Voldemort died at the ripe old age of 71!!

Only two Coca-Cola executives know the beverage’s secret formula.

One rumor has it that these executives each know only half of the secret formula, so they can only release the formula together. This idea is kind of similar to the “Two-man rule” used to prevent accidental nuclear strikes from submarines.

That rumor isn’t true, but it is true that only two executives know the “real formula”. The reason for this rule probably has less to do with keeping the recipe away from competition and more to do with hyping the drink as something special. Even if someone guessed the correct formula, the Coca-Cola company could deny it, and no one would ever really know. Coca-Cola’s brand name is enough to sell products; a competitor using the same formula wouldn’t stand a chance.
